Description
Lidocaine is an amide type local anesthetic that stabilizes the neuronal membrane and inhibits Na+ ion movements necessary for conduction of impulses. The 2% and 10% concentrations are suitable for different procedures and applications.

Pharmacology
Lidocaine stabilizes the neuronal membrane and inhibits Na+ ion movements to block pain signals from nerves to the brain.
Mechanism of action
Works on the skin by blocking pain signals from the nerves to the brain, numbing the area and decreasing pain sensation.
Dosage
Topical as Gel/Jelly:
- Mouth/throat pain (2%): 300 mg rinse; every 3 hours; max 2.4 g/day
- Anesthetic lubricant for intubation: Apply moderate amount to tube surface; max 600 mg/12 hr
- Urethral anesthesia (Males): Slowly instill 15 mL (300 mg); max 30 mL (600 mg)
- Skin irritation: Apply to affected area TID/QID
- Haemorrhoids/Perianal: Apply or insert rectally up to 6 times daily
Administration
- For external use only
- Use in the dose and duration as advised
- Check label for directions before use
- Clean and dry the affected area before application
- Wash hands after applying, unless hands are the affected area

Side effects

- Allergic reaction
- Application site reactions (burning, irritation, itching, and redness)
Precautions & warnings
- Do not apply to broken or infected skin
- Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and nose
- Do not cover with airtight dressings (risk of side effects)
- Consult doctor if no improvement in 2-4 weeks
- Inform doctor if you have liver disease or heart rhythm problems
Contraindications
- Hypovolaemia
- Heart block or other conduction disturbances
Drug interactions
- May increase serum levels with cimetidine and propranolol
- Increased risk of cardiac depression with beta-blockers and other antiarrhythmics
- Additive cardiac effects with IV phenytoin
- Hypokalaemia caused by acetazolamide, loop diuretics, and thiazides may antagonise effect of lidocaine

Use in pregnancy
Use in Pregnancy: Lidocaine (Lignocaine) Hydrochloride 2%, 10% is generally considered safe during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects to the developing baby.
Use in lactation
Use in Lactation: Lidocaine (Lignocaine) Hydrochloride 2%, 10% is probably safe during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests no significant risk to the baby.
Pediatric use
Use in children 2 years and older for intubation as directed; consult doctor for other uses.
Geriatric use
Use with caution in elderly.
Renal / hepatic impairment
Hepatic Impairment: Dosage reduction may be needed in liver disease.
Overdose effects
