Measles and Rubella Vaccine (Live, attenuated) is used for simultaneous immunization against measles and rubella in persons older than 8 months. It stimulates active immunity against diseases caused by live, attenuated viruses.
Description
This vaccine is a combination of live, attenuated measles and rubella viruses. The measles virus (CAM-70 strain) is grown in chicken embryo fibroblast cells and the rubella virus (Wistar RA 27/3 strain) is grown in human diploid cell culture. After reconstitution, each 0.5 mL contains live, attenuated measles virus ≥1000 CCID50 and live, attenuated rubella virus ≥1000 CCID50.

Pharmacology
Live, attenuated measles and rubella viruses stimulate active immunity in the body, providing protection against diseases caused by these viruses.
Mechanism of action
Creates active immunity against measles and rubella viruses.
Dosage
Adults and Children: 0.5 mL of reconstituted vaccine given by deep subcutaneous injection
EPI Schedule: After completion of 9 months, 1 dose of MR vaccine; after completion of 15 months, 1 dose of measles-containing vaccine
Administration
- Deep subcutaneous injection (anterolateral aspect of upper thigh in toddlers, outer aspect of arm in older children and adults)
- Do not give intravenously
- Use immediately after reconstitution
Missed dose
Not generally applicable (vaccine); consult doctor if needed.
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Pain and tenderness at injection site (within 24 hours, resolves in 2-3 days)
- Transient fever (within 1-2 weeks)
- Mild rash (within 12 days, lasts no more than 2 days)
Rare: Severe fever reaction
Very Rare: Allergic rash, anaphylactic shock, anaphylactoid purpura, thrombocytopenia purpura
Precautions & warnings
- Do not give intravenously
- Epinephrine and other emergency drugs should be prepared
- Other attenuated live vaccines should be given at least 1 month apart (can be given simultaneously with mumps vaccine)
- Vaccinate at least 3 months after immune globulin administration
- Avoid pregnancy for at least 3 months after vaccination
- Not recommended for use in epidemic season
- Freezing is prohibited
Contraindications
- Allergy to any ingredient in the vaccine
- Individuals receiving corticosteroids, other immunosuppressive drugs, or radiotherapy
- Febrile states, pregnancy, acute infectious diseases, leukemia, severe anemia
- Severe renal function impairment, decompensated heart disease
- Following administration of gammaglobulin or blood transfusions

Food interactions
No food interactions applicable (injection).
Use in pregnancy
Use in Pregnancy: Pregnancy Category C; avoid pregnancy for 3 months following vaccination.
Pregnancy Category: C — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.
Use in lactation
Use in Lactation: Caution should be exercised when administering to a nursing woman.
Pediatric use
Dose established for children older than 8 months.
Geriatric use
Dose established for adults.
Renal / hepatic impairment
Do not use in severe renal function impairment.
Overdose effects
Overdose not applicable (vaccine).
Storage conditions
Store at +2°C to +8°C; do not freeze; protect from light; keep out of reach of children.
