Measles and Rubella Vaccine (Live, attenuated) is used for simultaneous immunization against measles and rubella in persons older than 8 months. It stimulates active immunity against diseases caused by live, attenuated viruses.

Indications
  • Simultaneous immunization against measles and rubella in persons older than 8 months
Dosage

Adults and Children: 0.5 mL of reconstituted vaccine given by deep subcutaneous injection

EPI Schedule: After completion of 9 months, 1 dose of MR vaccine; after completion of 15 months, 1 dose of measles-containing vaccine

Side effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Pain and tenderness at injection site (within 24 hours, resolves in 2-3 days)
  • Transient fever (within 1-2 weeks)
  • Mild rash (within 12 days, lasts no more than 2 days)

Rare: Severe fever reaction

Very Rare: Allergic rash, anaphylactic shock, anaphylactoid purpura, thrombocytopenia purpura

Precautions & warnings
  • Do not give intravenously
  • Epinephrine and other emergency drugs should be prepared
  • Other attenuated live vaccines should be given at least 1 month apart (can be given simultaneously with mumps vaccine)
  • Vaccinate at least 3 months after immune globulin administration
  • Avoid pregnancy for at least 3 months after vaccination
  • Not recommended for use in epidemic season
  • Freezing is prohibited
