Description
Neomycin is an aminoglycoside that binds to 30S ribosomal subunit to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis and disrupt DNA synthesis. It is active against many gram-negative aerobes and some strains of staphylococci. Prednisolone decreases inflammation by inhibiting polymorphonuclear leukocyte migration and reversing increased capillary permeability, and suppresses the immune system.

Pharmacology
Neomycin binds to 30S ribosomal subunit to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis. Prednisolone inhibits polymorphonuclear leukocyte migration and reverses capillary permeability to reduce inflammation and suppresses immune system.
Mechanism of action
Treats infection by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis and reduces inflammation.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Eye Drops):
- Conjunctivitis: 1-2 drops in affected eye(s) 2-4 times daily
Adult Dose (Ear Drops):
- Otitis externa: 1-2 drops in affected ear 3-4 times daily
Pediatric Dose: 1-2 drops 2-4 times daily (eye); 1-2 drops 3-4 times daily (ear)
Administration
- Do not touch dropper tip to eye/ear
- Use at prescribed dose
- Avoid prolonged use
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember; skip if it's almost time for next dose; do not double the dose.
Side effects
Side Effects:
- Ophthalmic: Increased intraocular pressure and reduced visual function
- Ear: Discomfort and pain in ear
- Fungal and viral infections of cornea (with long-term steroid use)
Precautions & warnings
- Risk of persistent fungal infections with prolonged steroid use
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms including fungi
- If superinfection occurs, initiate appropriate therapy
- If purulent discharge, inflammation or pain worsens, discontinue use and consult doctor
- Allergic cross-reactions (kanamycin, paromomycin, streptomycin, gentamicin)
Contraindications
- Epithelial herpes simplex keratitis
- Vaccinia, varicella
- Viral diseases of cornea and conjunctiva
- Mycobacterial infection of eye
- Fungal diseases of ocular structures
- Hypersensitivity
- After uncomplicated removal of corneal foreign body
Drug interactions
- Synergistic effects with penicillins
- Additive toxicity with neurotoxic, ototoxic or nephrotoxic drugs
- May decrease absorption of digoxin and methotrexate
- May increase effects of oral anticoagulants
