Description
Oxaprozin is a propionic acid derivative NSAID. It inhibits cyclooxygenase enzyme to block prostaglandin synthesis, reducing pain, fever and inflammation.

Pharmacology
Oxaprozin inhibits cyclooxygenase enzyme to block prostaglandin synthesis, which mediates pain, fever and inflammation.
Mechanism of action
Relieves pain, fever and inflammation by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Oral):
- Osteoarthritis (mild-moderate): 600 mg/day
- Osteoarthritis (moderate-severe): 1200 mg/day
- Rheumatoid arthritis: 1200 mg/day
- Maximum: 1800 mg/day or 26 mg/kg/day (whichever is lower)
Pediatric Dose (JRA):
- 22-31 kg: 600 mg/day
- 32-54 kg: 900 mg/day
- >55 kg: 1200 mg/day
Administration
- Take with food
- Swallow tablet whole; do not chew, crush or break
- Take at the same time each day
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember; skip if it's almost time for next dose; do not double the dose.
Side effects
Common Side Effects:

- Nausea

Precautions & warnings
- Risk of stomach ulcers and bleeding
- Risk of kidney problems with long-term use
- Caution in history of heart disease or stroke
- Avoid alcohol
- Caution while driving
- Separate antacids by 2 hours
Contraindications
- Previous or active peptic ulcer
- Hypersensitivity
- Perioperative pain in CABG setting
Drug interactions
- Increased risk of salicylate toxicity with aspirin
- May increase effects of oral anticoagulants
- May reduce effects of beta-blockers, diuretics and antihypertensives
- Increased risk of methotrexate and lithium toxicity
Food interactions
Alcohol may increase stomach problems; avoid.
Use in pregnancy
Use in Pregnancy: Oxaprozin may be unsafe during pregnancy; animal studies show evidence of fetal harm.
Pregnancy Category: C — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.
Use in lactation
Use in Lactation: Oxaprozin is probably unsafe during breastfeeding; may pass into breast milk and harm the baby.
Pediatric use
Dose established for children 6 years+ (JRA).
Geriatric use
Elderly may require dose adjustment.
Renal / hepatic impairment
Renal Impairment: Severe renal impairment or dialysis: 600 mg/day; may increase to 1200 mg/day; monitor closely.
Hepatic Impairment: Caution in severe liver disease; dose adjustment may be needed.
Overdose effects
Overdose may cause severe GI toxicity, renal failure; symptomatic treatment.
Storage conditions
Store in a cool and dry place, away from light; keep out of reach of children.
