Description

The colloidal solution containing hydroxyethyl starch is a volume expander that increases intravascular oncotic pressure and restores plasma volume. It reduces blood viscosity and improves microcirculation. The 60g/100mL hydroxyethyl starch solution with sodium chloride maintains electrolyte balance.

Pharmacology

The colloidal solution containing hydroxyethyl starch restores plasma volume by increasing intravascular oncotic pressure. It reduces blood viscosity and improves microcirculation. Sodium chloride maintains electrolyte balance.

Dosage

Adult Dose (IV):

  • Up to 50 mL/kg body weight per day (equivalent to 3 g hydroxyethyl starch and 7.7 mEq sodium/kg)
  • Up to 3500 mL for a 70 kg patient

Pediatric Dose (IV):

  • Newborns & <2 years: Mean dose 16 mL/kg
  • 2-12 years: Mean dose 36 mL/kg
  • Give initial 10-20 mL by slow IV infusion and monitor for anaphylactoid reaction
Administration
  • Administered by healthcare professional as slow IV infusion
  • In severe dehydration, give crystalloid solution first

Side effects

Side Effects (<10%):

  • Immune system disorders (rare): Anaphylactoid reactions (mild influenza-like symptoms, bradycardia, tachycardia, bronchospasm, non-cardiac pulmonary edema)
  • Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders (common, dose-dependent): Prolonged administration of high doses may cause pruritus (itching)
Precautions & warnings
  • Anaphylactoid reactions may occur; if hypersensitivity occurs, discontinue immediately
  • Regularly assess fluid status and infusion rate (especially in cardiac insufficiency or severe kidney dysfunction)
  • Caution in severe liver disease or severe bleeding disorders
  • Contraindicated in renal failure with oliguria or anuria
Contraindications
  • Hypersensitivity to hydroxyethyl starch
  • Fluid overload (hyperhydration) especially pulmonary edema and congestive heart failure
  • Renal failure with oliguria or anuria (not related to hypovolemia)
  • Patients receiving dialysis treatment
  • Severe hypernatremia or severe hyperchloremia
  • Intracranial bleeding
