Trypan Blue 0.06% is used before eye examinations. It has tissue staining properties. Once injected, it stains the damaged cells of the eye, helping the doctor identify problems with the cornea and diagnose certain eye diseases.
Description
Trypan Blue is a selective tissue staining agent (dye) which stains the anterior lens capsule of the human crystalline lens. The dye does not penetrate the capsule, permitting visualization of the anterior capsule in contrast to the non-stained lens cortex and inner lens material.

Pharmacology
Trypan Blue is a selective tissue staining agent which stains the anterior lens capsule of the human crystalline lens. The dye does not penetrate the capsule, permitting visualization of the anterior capsule in contrast to the non-stained lens cortex and inner lens material.
Mechanism of action
Stains the anterior lens capsule to aid visualization during ophthalmic surgery.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Ophthalmic):
- Inject an air bubble into the anterior chamber using a 26 gauge needle
- Inject Trypan Blue into the anterior lens capsule using a tuberculin syringe
- Sufficient staining is achieved as soon as the dye contacts the capsule
- If some area is left unstained, inject one more drop until it gets stained
Administration
- Administered by a doctor or nurse; do not self-administer
- Must be administered in a hospital or clinical setting

Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Eye discoloration
- Discoloration of high water content hydrogen intraocular lenses
- Inadvertent staining of the posterior lens capsule and vitreous face (generally self-limited, lasting up to one week)
Precautions & warnings
- Unknown if alters ability to drive; caution advised
- After injection, all excess Trypan Blue should be immediately removed by thorough irrigation of the anterior chamber
- Caution to avoid eye damage
Contraindications
- Contraindicated when a non-hydrated (dry state), hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) is planned to be inserted, because the dye may be absorbed by the IOL and stain the IOL

Food interactions
It is not known whether it is safe to consume alcohol with Trypan Blue 0.06%; consult your doctor.
