Valganciclovir is used to treat cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection of the retina (retinitis) in adult patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It is also used for the prevention of CMV infection in patients who have received an organ transplant from a CMV-infected donor.

Description

Valganciclovir is an antiviral medication. It prevents the multiplication of virus in human cells. This stops the virus from producing new viruses and clears up your infection.

Valganciclovir is an antiviral medication. It prevents the multiplication of virus in human cells.

Mechanism of action

Inhibits viral DNA synthesis, preventing virus multiplication.

Dosage

Adult Dose (Oral):

  • Dose and duration will be determined by your doctor
  • Dose adjustment may be needed based on renal function
Administration
  • Take with food
  • Swallow whole; do not chew, crush or break
  • Drink plenty of water during treatment
Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible; if almost time for next dose, skip it; do not double the dose.

  • Stomach pain
  • Decreased red blood cell count
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Low white blood cell count
