Valganciclovir is used to treat cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection of the retina (retinitis) in adult patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It is also used for the prevention of CMV infection in patients who have received an organ transplant from a CMV-infected donor.

Indications
  • Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection
  • CMV retinitis (in AIDS patients)
  • Prevention of CMV infection in organ transplant
Dosage

Adult Dose (Oral):

  • Dose and duration will be determined by your doctor
  • Dose adjustment may be needed based on renal function
Side effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Stomach pain
  • Decreased red blood cell count
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Low white blood cell count
Precautions & warnings
  • May decrease alertness; do not drive
  • Drink plenty of water during treatment; helps prevent dehydration and kidney damage
  • Finish the full course even if you feel better
  • Consult doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding
