Mechanism of action
Zinc is essential for many enzymes, cell division, immune function and wound healing; supplementation corrects deficiency.
Dosage
Deficiency: usually 10–40 mg elemental zinc/day; childhood diarrhoea 10–20 mg/day for 10–14 days. Higher in Wilson's disease (under medical care).
Administration
Best absorbed 1 hour before or 2 hours after food; take with food if it upsets the stomach.
Missed dose
Take when remembered; skip if the next dose is near.
Side effects
Nausea, stomach upset, metallic taste; long-term high doses can cause copper deficiency.

Avoid prolonged high doses; watch for signs of copper deficiency.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to zinc salts.
Drug interactions
Antibiotics (tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones), iron and calcium mutually reduce absorption; separate doses.
