Cefoperazone is a third generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the lungs, ear, urinary tract, skin, soft tissues, bones, joints, blood, and heart.

Adult Dose (Parenteral):

Hepatic Dose: Hepatic impairment or biliary obstruction: Maximum 4 g/day.

Renal Dose: Renal impairment: 1-2 g/day. With hepatic impairment: 1-2 g/day.

Common Side Effects:

  • Increased liver enzymes
  • Allergic reaction
  • Anemia (low red blood cell count)
  • Diarrhea
  • Redness and pain at injection site
Precautions & warnings
  • [SAFE] Cefoperazone does not usually affect your ability to drive.
  • Your doctor has prescribed Cefoperazone to cure your infection and improve your symptoms. Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping it early may make the infection harder to treat.
  • Discontinue Cefoperazone and inform your doctor immediately if you get a rash, itchy skin, swelling of face and mouth, or have difficulty in breathing.
  • Diarrhea may occur as a side effect but should stop when your course is complete. Inform your doctor if it does not stop or if you find blood in your stools.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol while taking Cefoperazone as it may cause increased side effects.
  • Cefoperazone is extensively excreted in bile. The serum half-life of Cefoperazone is increased 2-4 fold in patients with hepatic disease and/or biliary obstruction.
