Cefoperazone is a third generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the lungs, ear, urinary tract, skin, soft tissues, bones, joints, blood, and heart.

Pharmacology
Cefoperazone is a bactericidal Cephalosporin antibiotic which is resistant to most beta-lactamases and active against a wide range of aerobic & anaerobic, Gram positive & Gram negative bacteria. The bactericidal action of Cefoperazone results from the inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis. Cefoperazone has a high degree of stability in the presence of beta-lactamases produced by most Gram negative pathogens. Cefoperazone is usually active against organisms which are resistant to other beta-lactam antibiotics because of beta-lactamase production.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Parenteral):

Hepatic Dose: Hepatic impairment or biliary obstruction: Maximum 4 g/day.
Renal Dose: Renal impairment: 1-2 g/day. With hepatic impairment: 1-2 g/day.

- Increased liver enzymes
- Allergic reaction
- Anemia (low red blood cell count)
- Diarrhea
- Redness and pain at injection site
Use in pregnancy
[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Cefoperazone is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects to the developing baby; however, there are limited human studies. Pregnancy Category B. This drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.
Pregnancy Category: B — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.
Precautions & warnings
- [SAFE] Cefoperazone does not usually affect your ability to drive.
- Your doctor has prescribed Cefoperazone to cure your infection and improve your symptoms. Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping it early may make the infection harder to treat.
- Discontinue Cefoperazone and inform your doctor immediately if you get a rash, itchy skin, swelling of face and mouth, or have difficulty in breathing.
- Diarrhea may occur as a side effect but should stop when your course is complete. Inform your doctor if it does not stop or if you find blood in your stools.
- Avoid consuming alcohol while taking Cefoperazone as it may cause increased side effects.
- Cefoperazone is extensively excreted in bile. The serum half-life of Cefoperazone is increased 2-4 fold in patients with hepatic disease and/or biliary obstruction.

Storage conditions
Cefoperazone is to be stored in a dry place, below 25°C and protected from light prior to reconstitution. The reconstituted solution may be stored for 24 hours if kept in room temperature (below 25°C).
