Ciclesonide is an inhaled corticosteroid used to prevent the symptoms of asthma (wheezing and shortness of breath).
Indications
- Asthma
- Allergic rhinitis (nasal spray)
Dosage
Adult Dose (Inhalation - Asthma): Usual dose 160 mcg once daily (preferably in the evening) from a metered-dose inhaler; reduced to 80 mcg once daily for maintenance; may increase to 160 mcg twice daily.
Adult Dose (Nasal Spray - Allergic Rhinitis): 1 spray (50 mcg/spray) in each nostril once daily. Maximum total daily dose should not exceed 2 sprays in each nostril (200 mcg/day).
Pediatric Dose (>12 years): Same as adult dose.
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Hoarseness of voice
- Sore throat
- Oral fungal infections (oral candidiasis)
Rare Side Effects: Adrenal suppression, growth retardation (children), decreased bone density (osteoporosis), glaucoma, cataracts.
Precautions & warnings
- Ciclesonide dampens down inflammation in the lungs for long-term maintenance treatment of asthma.
- Will not work for an ongoing asthma attack. Use your rescue inhaler for sudden breathing difficulty.
- Learn the correct technique of using inhalers to ensure medication reaches your lungs and side effects are minimized.
- Gargle with warm water after each inhalation to avoid fungal infections in your mouth and throat.
- Take it at the same time every day to prevent asthma attacks.
- Do not open and close the cover unnecessarily as you may lose the medicine.
