Ciclesonide is an inhaled corticosteroid used to prevent the symptoms of asthma (wheezing and shortness of breath).
Indications
- Asthma
- Allergic rhinitis (nasal spray)
Pharmacology
Ciclesonide, an inhaled corticosteroid, is converted by esterases in the lungs to the active metabolite, desisobutyryl-ciclesonide, which has anti-inflammatory activity. It reduces the activity of inflammatory cells in the airways and decreases airway hyperresponsiveness.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Inhalation - Asthma): Usual dose 160 mcg once daily (preferably in the evening) from a metered-dose inhaler; reduced to 80 mcg once daily for maintenance; may increase to 160 mcg twice daily.
Adult Dose (Nasal Spray - Allergic Rhinitis): 1 spray (50 mcg/spray) in each nostril once daily. Maximum total daily dose should not exceed 2 sprays in each nostril (200 mcg/day).
Pediatric Dose (>12 years): Same as adult dose.
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Hoarseness of voice
- Sore throat
- Oral fungal infections (oral candidiasis)
Rare Side Effects: Adrenal suppression, growth retardation (children), decreased bone density (osteoporosis), glaucoma, cataracts.
Use in pregnancy

Precautions & warnings
- Ciclesonide dampens down inflammation in the lungs for long-term maintenance treatment of asthma.
- Will not work for an ongoing asthma attack. Use your rescue inhaler for sudden breathing difficulty.
- Learn the correct technique of using inhalers to ensure medication reaches your lungs and side effects are minimized.
- Gargle with warm water after each inhalation to avoid fungal infections in your mouth and throat.
- Take it at the same time every day to prevent asthma attacks.
- Do not open and close the cover unnecessarily as you may lose the medicine.
Overdose effects
Acute overdose may cause hypercortisolism symptoms. Chronic overdose may cause adrenal suppression.
Storage conditions
Store below 25°C in a dry and cool place. Keep out of reach of children.
