Cyclopentolate Hydrochloride 1% Eye prep is an anticholinergic agent used to produce mydriasis and cycloplegia for diagnostic purposes and for the treatment of uveitis.
Indications
- Eye examination (mydriasis and cycloplegia)
- Uveitis
Dosage
Adults and children over 1 year: 1 drop instilled in the affected eye(s), repeated after 5 minutes if necessary. Administer 40-50 minutes prior to the procedure.
Infants <3 months: Not recommended.
Patients with heavily pigmented irises may require larger doses.
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Eye irritation
- Foreign body sensation
- Blurred vision
- Eye itching
- Stinging in the eyes
- Increased intraocular pressure
- Burning sensation
Serious Side Effects:
- Acute angle-closure glaucoma
- Xerostomia
- Flushing
- Tachycardia
- Urinary retention
- Tachypnea
- Delirium, psychosis
- Fever, stupor, coma
Precautions & warnings
- May cause blurring of vision for a short time; do not drive until vision is clear.
- May increase intraocular pressure. Use with caution in elderly and patients with shallow anterior chambers.
- Children are more susceptible to systemic side effects.
- If dry mouth, tachycardia or dizziness appear, reduce dose or discontinue.
