Desoximetasone is a topical corticosteroid used for the treatment of inflammatory and allergic skin conditions such as eczema and atopic dermatitis.

Pharmacology
The precise mechanism of the antiinflammatory activity of topical steroids is uncertain. However, corticosteroids are thought to act by the induction of phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins, collectively called lipocortins. These proteins control the biosynthesis of potent mediators of inflammation such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes by inhibiting the release of their common precursor arachidonic acid.
Dosage
Adults & Children: Apply a thin film of 0.05-0.25% cream/gel/lotion/ointment to affected areas twice daily. Rub in gently.
Side effects
Common: Burning, itching, irritation, dryness at application site.
Rare (with occlusive dressings): Folliculitis, hypertrichosis, acneiform eruptions, hypopigmentation, perioral dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, skin maceration, skin atrophy, striae, miliaria.
Use in pregnancy
Pregnancy Category C. Desoximetasone may be unsafe during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. Use only if clearly needed.
Pregnancy Category: C — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.
Precautions & warnings
For external use only; avoid eye contact; do not use occlusive dressings (unless directed by doctor); discontinue if infection develops; consult doctor if no improvement within 2 weeks; do not stop abruptly.
Overdose effects
Topically applied Desoximetasone can be absorbed in sufficient amounts to produce systemic effects.
Storage conditions
Do not store above 30°C. Keep away from light and out of reach of children.
