Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide is an antitussive medicine. It is used for the treatment of dry cough. Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide can be taken with or without food, but take it at the same time to get the most benefit. It should be taken as your doctor's advice. The dose and how often you take it depends on what you are taking it for. Your doctor will decide how much you need to improve your symptoms. Remember dosage is decided on the basis of type of medicine (syrup or lozenge), age and present medical condition of the person. You should take this medicine for as long as it is prescribed for you. You must inform your doctor if symptoms does not get improved within 7 days of the treatment. The most common side effects of this medicine include sleepiness, dizziness, confusion, and nausea.. If these bother you or appear serious, let your doctor know. There may be ways of reducing or preventing them. Generally, it is advised to drink plenty of fluids while on treatment with this medicine. To overcome dizziness, avoid driving or attention-seeking activities. Before taking this medicine, let your doctor know if you are pregnant, or breastfeeding. Your doctor should also know about all other medicines you are taking as many of these may make this medicine less effective or change the way it works. Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide is an antitussive (cough suppressants). It suppresses cough by reducing the activity of cough centre in the brain.

• Dry cough

Dextromethorphan is a centrally acting cough suppressant which acts on the cough centre in the medulla.

Adult Dose: Oral Cough suppressant Adults (>12 years of age): 10-20 mg (1-2 teaspoonful) every 4 hours, or 30 mg (3 teaspoonful) every 6-8 hours. Do not exceed 120 mg (12 teaspoonful) in 24 hours. Child Dose: Oral Cough suppressant Children 6 to 12 years of age: 5-10 mg (1/2-1 teaspoonful) every 4 hours, or 15 mg (11/2 teaspoonful) every 6-8 hours. Do not exceed 60 mg (6 teaspoonful) in 24 hours. 2 to 6 years of age: 2.5-5 mg (1/4-1/2 teaspoonful) every 4 hours, or 7.5 mg (3/4 teaspoonful) every 6-8 hours. Do not exceed 30 mg (3 teaspoonful) in 24 hours. <2 years of age: Use only as directed by the physician.

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Measure it with a measuring cup and take it by mouth. Shake well before use. Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

If you miss a dose of Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

It is usually taken for a short time, until the symptoms clear up. Allow the lozenge or disintegrating strip to dissolve in your mouth. Do not chew or swallow. Measure the syrup with a special dose-measuring spoon or cup, not a regular table spoon. Drink extra fluids to help loosen the congestion and lubricate your throat while you are taking this medication. It should not be administered to patients with chronic cough or where cough is accompanied by excessive secretions. Inform your doctor if your cough lasts more than 7 days, comes back, or occurs with fever, rash or headache. These could be signs of a serious condition.

Hypersensitivity to Dextromethorphan or any other component.

Dextromethorphan: Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), antipsychotics, anxiolytics and hypnotics, cimetidine, ciprofloxacin, domperidone, metoclopramide, mexiletine, CYP2D6 inhibitors, ritonavir, alcohol. Potentially Fatal: Memantine, moclobemide.
