Indications

Pharmacology
Etomidate is a carboxylated imidazole. It is a sedative and hypnotic agent used commonly for induction anaesthesia.
Dosage
Adult Dose (IV):
- General Anesthesia Induction: 0.3-0.6 mg/kg IVP over 30-60 sec.
Child Dose (>=10 years):
- General Anesthesia Induction: 0.3-0.6 mg/kg IVP over 30-60 sec.

- Headache
- Fatigue
- Weakness
- Fever
- Muscle pain
Use in pregnancy
Use in Pregnancy: Etomidate may be unsafe; animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby.
Pregnancy Category: C — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.
Precautions & warnings
Precautions:
- Etomidate may affect your ability to drive; may cause sleepiness and impair ability to think or react.
- Used only in a hospital setting.
- Inform doctor if you are pregnant or suffering from liver disease.
- Safe to use in kidney disease.
- Safe for breastfeeding mothers (breastfeeding can be resumed after recovery from anesthesia).
Overdose effects
Overdose: Overdose may cause excessive sedation, respiratory depression; symptomatic treatment.
