Domperidone is a prokinetic medication used for the treatment of nausea, vomiting, and indigestion.
Indications
- Dyspeptic symptom complex (fullness, bloating, heartburn)
- Nausea and vomiting
- Non-ulcer dyspepsia
- Dopamine-agonist-induced nausea and vomiting in Parkinson's disease
Dosage
Adult (Nausea/Vomiting): 10-20 mg every 4-8 hours (max 80 mg/day).
Adult (Dyspepsia): 10 mg 3-4 times daily (max 20 mg 3-4 times daily, last dose at bedtime).
Child: 0.2-0.4 mg/kg every 4-8 hours.
Side effects
Common: Headache, dry mouth, stomach pain, diarrhea.
Rare: Transient intestinal cramps, extrapyramidal reactions (in children), hyperprolactinemia (galactorrhea, gynecomastia), allergic reactions.
Precautions & warnings
May affect driving ability (drowsiness, dizziness). Avoid alcohol. Do not use in GI hemorrhage, obstruction, or perforation. Do not use for longer than 7 days without consulting your doctor. Caution in liver and kidney disease.
