Polysaccharide Pneumococcal Vaccine contains 23 pneumococcal polysaccharide serotypes that account for approximately 90% of invasive pneumococcal disease types. It is recommended for active immunization against pneumococcal disease in children aged from 2 years, adolescents, and adults.
Indications
- Active immunization against pneumococcal disease in children from 2 years, adolescents, and adults
Dosage
Primary Vaccination:
- Adults and children ≥2 years: Single dose of 0.5 mL (IM or SC)
- Not recommended in children <2 years
- Should be given at least 2 weeks before elective splenectomy, chemotherapy, or immunosuppressive treatment
- Avoid during chemotherapy/radiation therapy; at least 3 months after completion
- HIV patients: Vaccinate as soon as possible after diagnosis
Revaccination:
- Single dose 0.5 mL (IM or SC)
- Revaccination within 3 years not recommended (increased risk of adverse reactions)
- Healthy adults: Not routinely revaccinated
- High-risk patients (asplenia): May be considered at 3 years

Common Side Effects (>10%):
- Injection-site pain/soreness (60%)
- Injection-site swelling/induration (20.3%)
- Headache (17.6%)
- Injection-site erythema (16.4%)
- Asthenia and fatigue (13.2%)
- Myalgia (11.9%)
Precautions & warnings
- Delay use in significant febrile illness or active infection
- Never inject intravascularly or intradermally
- Reduced antibody response in immunosuppressed patients
- Caution in pregnancy and lactation
- Do not stop required prophylactic antibiotics
- Epinephrine (adrenaline) should be available for anaphylactic reactions
