Famciclovir INN is an antiviral medication used for the treatment of herpes labialis, herpes simplex virus infections, shingles, and genital herpes infection.
Indications
- Herpes Labialis: Used for treatment of cold sores on lips.
- Herpes Simplex Virus Infections: Used for treatment of HSV infections.
- Shingles (Herpes Zoster): Used for treatment of shingles.
- Genital Herpes Infection: Used for treatment of genital herpes.
Dosage
Adult Dose:
- Herpes Zoster (Shingles): 500 mg tid x 7 days.
- Genital Herpes (First Episode): 250 mg tid x 5 days.
- Genital Herpes (Recurrent): 125 mg bid x 5 days.
- Herpes Labialis: 1500 mg single dose OR 750 mg bid x 1 day.
Renal Dose: Dose adjustment may be needed based on CrCl.

Precautions & warnings
Precautions:
- Famciclovir INN may decrease alertness, affect vision or make you feel sleepy and dizzy; do not drive if these symptoms occur.
- Drink plenty of water during treatment to prevent dehydration and kidney damage.
- Inform doctor if pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding.
- Use with caution in kidney disease; dose adjustment may be needed.
- Use with caution in severe liver disease; dose adjustment may be needed.
