At a glance
Chorionic Gonadotrophin is a polypeptide hormone used to induce ovulation in females and treat hypogonadism, cryptorchidism, and oligospermia in males.
Indications
- Anovulatory infertility & ovulation induction in females
- Preparation of follicles for puncture in controlled ovarian hyperstimulation programs (ART/IVF)
- Luteal phase support
- Threatened and habitual abortion
- Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism in males
- Delayed puberty associated with insufficient gonadotropic pituitary function
- Cryptorchidism (not due to anatomical obstruction)
- Oligospermia
Pharmacology
Pharmacodynamic Properties: Highly Purified Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin has LH activity. LH is indispensable in normal female and male gamete growth and maturation, and gonadal steroid production. In the female: hCG is given as a substitute for the endogenous mid-cycle LH surge to induce the final phase of follicular maturation, leading to ovulation. hCG is also given as a substitute for endogenous LH during the luteal phase. In the male: hCG is given to stimulate Leydig cells to promote the production of testosterone.
Dosage
Female Dose (IM):
| Indication | Dose | Schedule |
|---|---|---|
| Ovulation induction/follicle preparation | 5000-10000 IU | Single injection |
| Luteal phase support | 2500-5000 IU | Repeat on days 3, 6 and 9 after ovulation |
| Threatened/habitual abortion | 5000 IU | Twice weekly (before 7th week of gestation) |
Male Dose (IM):
| Indication | Dose | Schedule |
|---|---|---|
| Cryptorchidism | 500-4000 IU | 3 times weekly (1-2 months after testicular descent) |
| Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism/male infertility | 500-4000 IU | 2-3 times weekly |
