Dextrose 100% is an intravenous glucose solution used for short-term fluid replacement, hypoglycemia, and dehydration.
Indications
- Carbohydrate and fluid depletion

- Emergency management of hyperkalemia
Dosage
Dosage depends on the clinical condition of the patient. 5% dextrose: 500-1000 ml. 10% solution: 20-30 ml/kg. 25% solution: 10-35 drops/min for adults.
Oral powder: Adults and children (>2 years): 10-20 gm as single dose (may repeat in 10 min if needed).
Side effects
Common: Injection site reactions (pain, swelling, redness), fever, ongoing cough, headache, weakness.
Serious: Breathing difficulty, hallucinations, seizures, arrhythmia, hypokalemia.
Precautions & warnings
Monitor serum glucose concentration; insulin may be needed in diabetic patients. Do not mix with whole blood (hemolysis and clumping may occur). Do not use if solution is cloudy, contains particles, or expired. Avoid in kidney disease, caution in liver disease.
