Description
Dextrose is a form of glucose (sugar). Dextrose 100% injection is given intravenously to replace lost fluids and provide carbohydrates to the body. It is used to treat low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), insulin shock, or dehydration (fluid loss). It is also given for nutritional support to patients who are unable to eat because of illness, injury, or other medical condition.

Pharmacology
Dextrose is a form of glucose (sugar). Dextrose injection is given intravenously to replace lost fluids and provide carbohydrates to the body. It is used to treat low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), insulin shock, or dehydration (fluid loss).
Mechanism of action
Dextrose 100% provides glucose and fluid to the body, which helps in energy production and restoration of fluid balance.
Dosage
Dosage depends on the clinical condition of the patient. 5% dextrose: 500-1000 ml. 10% solution: 20-30 ml/kg. 25% solution: 10-35 drops/min for adults.
Oral powder: Adults and children (>2 years): 10-20 gm as single dose (may repeat in 10 min if needed).

Side effects
Common: Injection site reactions (pain, swelling, redness), fever, ongoing cough, headache, weakness.

Precautions & warnings
Monitor serum glucose concentration; insulin may be needed in diabetic patients. Do not mix with whole blood (hemolysis and clumping may occur). Do not use if solution is cloudy, contains particles, or expired. Avoid in kidney disease, caution in liver disease.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to dextrose; allergy to corn or corn products.
