At a glance

Aluminium Hydroxide + Magnesium Hydroxide is a combination antacid used to neutralize excess stomach acid and treat heartburn, indigestion, gastritis and peptic ulcer.

Indications

Hyperacidity, peptic ulcer, gastritis, heartburn, sour stomach, dyspepsia, reflux oesophagitis.

Pharmacology

Aluminium hydroxide is a slow-acting antacid and adsorbent with prolonged effect and high neutralizing power. Magnesium hydroxide provides slow but sustained acid neutralizing properties. Aluminium hydroxide forms a protective coating over the ulcer surface to facilitate healing. Magnesium hydroxide increases peristaltic activity causing osmotic retention of fluids, resulting in bowel evacuation.

Dosage

Tablet: 2 tablets 1-3 hours after meals and at bedtime, or as directed by the physician.

Suspension: 2 teaspoonfuls (10 mL) 1-3 hours after meals and at bedtime, or as directed by the physician.

Gastric Hyperacidity/Heartburn: Up to 1 g/day.

Hyperphosphataemia in Chronic Renal Failure: Up to 10 g/day in divided doses with meals.

Side effects

  • Aluminium hydroxide: Chalky taste, constipation, fecal impaction, stomach cramps
  • Magnesium hydroxide: Diarrhea

With long-term use: Alkaluria (may predispose to nephrolithiasis by forming calcium phosphate precipitation)

Serious (rare): Aluminium intoxication (in chronic renal failure), hypophosphataemia, osteomalacia, hypermagnesaemia, alkalosis.

Pregnancy Category: C — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.
