Indications
- Convulsions of eclampsia
- Pre-eclampsia
Dosage
Eclampsia/Severe Pre-eclampsia:
- Total initial dose: 10-14 g of magnesium sulfate
- IV: 4 g in 5% Dextrose Injection (rate not to exceed 150 mg/min)
- IM: 4-5 g (50% undiluted) into each buttock
- Subsequent IM doses: 4-5 g into alternate buttocks every 4 hours (based on patellar reflex and respiratory function)
Side effects
Hypermagnesemia Symptoms:
- Nausea, vomiting, flushing, thirst
- Hypotension, drowsiness, confusion
- Slurred speech, double vision
- Bradycardia, muscle weakness
- Hypocalcemia, paralytic ileus
Precautions & warnings
- Caution in renal impairment, myasthenia gravis, digitalized patients
- Monitor serum-magnesium concentrations
- Caution in pregnancy
