Naftifine Topical is an allylamine antifungal used for skin fungal infections such as tinea pedis, tinea cruris and tinea corporis. It inhibits squalene monooxygenase enzyme to reduce ergosterol synthesis.
Indications
- Interdigital tinea pedis
- Tinea cruris
- Tinea corporis
Pharmacology
Naftifine interferes with sterol biosynthesis by inhibiting squalene 2,3-epoxidase enzyme, resulting in decreased ergosterol and accumulation of squalene in fungal cells, damaging the fungal cell wall.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Topical):
- Cream/Gel: Apply a thin layer to affected areas plus half inch margin of healthy skin
- Cream: Once daily; Gel: Twice daily (morning and evening)
- Tinea cruris and tinea corporis: 2-4 weeks
- Tinea pedis: 4-6 weeks; severe infections may require prolonged treatment
Pediatric Dose (12-17 years): Same as adult
Side effects
Common Side Effects (≥1%):
- Pruritus
- Burning
- Stinging
- Dryness
- Redness
- Local irritation
- Rash
- Skin tenderness
Use in pregnancy
Use in Pregnancy: Naftifine is safe during pregnancy (Category B); use only if clearly needed.
Pregnancy Category: B — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.
Precautions & warnings
- Discontinue use if irritation or sensitivity develops
- Avoid contact with eyes, nose, mouth and mucous membranes
- Avoid occlusive dressings or wrappings
Overdose effects
Topical naftifine overdose is not expected to be dangerous.
Storage conditions
Store below 30°C, away from light and in a dry place; keep out of reach of children.
