Indications
- Occasional constipation
- Bowel cleansing (before surgery, X-ray, or endoscopic examination)
Dosage
Adult (Colon cleansing - Early morning procedure): First dose at 7 AM, second dose at 7 PM (each dose: 15 mL solution + 250 mL clear liquid, repeat 3 times within 20 minutes).
Adult (Constipation - ≥12 years): 20-45 mL.
Child (10-11 years): 10-20 mL.
Child (5-9 years): 5-10 mL.
Side effects
Common: Bloating (31-41%), nausea (26-30%), abdominal pain (23-25%), vomiting (4-9%).
Other: Dizziness, headache, seizures, renal impairment, increased BUN/creatinine, acute renal failure, acute phosphate nephropathy, anaphylaxis, rash, pruritus, urticaria, throat tightness, bronchospasm, dyspnea.
Precautions & warnings
Caution in severe renal insufficiency (CrCl <30 mL/min), CHF, ascites, unstable angina, gastric retention, ileus, acute bowel obstruction, pseudo-obstruction, severe chronic constipation, bowel perforation, acute colitis, toxic megacolon, gastric bypass surgery, hypomotility syndrome.
