Povidone Iodine 1% Mouth-Wash/Gargle is an antiseptic and disinfectant used to kill germs that cause sore throat. It also relieves dryness or irritation of the mouth and throat and helps prevent and treat oral infections.
Indications
- Sore throat
- Oral infections (gingivitis, mouth ulcers)
- Oral hygiene before, during, and after dental and oral surgery
Pharmacology
Povidone-iodine slowly releases elemental iodine, providing prolonged germicidal activity. It is effective against a wide range of microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores. As a mouthwash, it oxidizes and inactivates microorganisms on the oral mucosa, preventing infections.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Mouthwash/Gargle):
- Use undiluted or diluted with equal volume of warm water
- Gargle or rinse with up to 10 mL for up to 30 seconds without swallowing
- Repeat up to four times daily for up to 14 consecutive days
Pediatric Dose (>6 years):
- Same as adult

Use in Pregnancy: May be unsafe during pregnancy; animal studies have shown harmful effects; consult your doctor.
Precautions & warnings
- Prolonged use may lead to absorption of significant iodine; do not use for more than 14 days
- Avoid regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or on lithium therapy
- If mouth sores or ulcers do not heal within 14 days, seek medical advice
