Povidone Iodine 5% Topical is an antiseptic and disinfectant used for treatment and prevention of wound infections. It kills harmful microbes and controls their growth, preventing infections on the affected area.
Indications
- Primary and secondary topical infections
- Infected surgical incisions
- Infected decubitus or stasis ulcers
- Pyodermas
- Secondarily infected dermatoses
- Infected traumatic lesions
- Minor cuts, wounds, abrasions
- Prevention of infection in burns
Dosage
Adult Dose (Topical):
- Ointment (treatment of infection): Apply once or twice daily or at dressing changes, for a maximum of 14 days
- Ointment (prevention of infection): Apply once or twice a week as long as necessary
- Powder: Apply a light dusting to the affected area as needed

Side Effects:
- No common side effects seen
- Skin and mucous membrane irritation (rare)
Precautions & warnings
- For deep or puncture wounds or serious burns, consult a physician
- If redness, irritation, swelling, or pain persists or infection occurs, discontinue use
- Avoid regular use in thyroid disorders (nodular colloid goitre, endemic goitre, Hashimoto's thyroiditis) or on lithium therapy
- Not for use in children under 2 years
- Caution when regular applications to broken skin are made to patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
