Sulfinpyrazone is a uricosuric drug used for the treatment of hyperuricemia with gout. It increases uric acid excretion by inhibiting tubular reabsorption of uric acid in the renal tubules.
Indications
- Hyperuricemia with gout
Dosage
Adult Dose (Oral):
- Start: 100-200 mg twice daily; gradually increase over 2-3 weeks to 600 mg daily
- Maintenance: After plasma urate controlled, 200 mg daily in divided doses
- Maximum: 800 mg daily
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- Skin rashes
- Renal impairment or failure
- Salt and water retention
- Blood dyscrasia, jaundice, hepatitis
- Acute gout attacks
- Uric acid renal calculi (with inadequate fluid intake)
Precautions & warnings
- Caution in patients with heart failure
- Reduce dose in mild-moderate renal impairment
- Caution in pregnancy and lactation
- Ensure adequate fluid intake (2-3 L/day) and urine alkalinization
- Monitor renal function and blood counts
