Indications
- Duodenal ulcer
- Gastric ulcer
- Chronic gastritis
- Prophylaxis of gastrointestinal hemorrhage from stress ulceration
Dosage
Adult Dose (Oral):
- Peptic ulcer/gastritis: 1 g 4 times daily or 2 g twice daily (4-8 weeks; up to 12 weeks if needed)
- Maintenance: 1 g twice daily (to prevent duodenal ulcer recurrence)
- Stress ulcer bleeding prophylaxis: 1 g 6 times daily (max 8 g/day)
Pediatric Dose (Oral):
- 1 month-2 years: 250 mg 4-6 times daily
- 2-12 years: 500 mg 4-6 times daily
- 12-18 years: 1 g 4-6 times daily
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Constipation (most common)
- Headache, nausea
- Abdominal pain, diarrhea
- Urticaria
Precautions & warnings
- Caution in renal dysfunction (increased aluminum absorption)
- Do not use in dialysis patients
- Bezoar formation possible (critically ill patients, enteral feeding)
- May affect driving ability (dizziness, drowsiness)
