Rizatriptan is a prescription medicine used for the acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura. It relieves migraine headache, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound by constricting blood vessels in the brain.
Indications
- Acute migraine attacks (with or without aura)
Dosage
Adult Dose (Oral):
- Initial: 10 mg (for a single attack); if ineffective, do not take a second dose for the same attack
- Recurrence: 10 mg if symptoms return (at least 2 hours apart)
- Maximum: 30 mg/24 hours (or 20 mg/24 hours if taking propranolol)
- With propranolol: 5 mg (max 3 doses/24 hours)
- Mild-moderate hepatic/renal impairment: Start with 5 mg (may repeat 5 mg after 2 hours); max 10 mg/24 hours
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Dizziness and somnolence
- Dry mouth
- Throat, jaw, and neck pain
- Paresthesia (tingling or pricking sensation)
- Weakness and heaviness
- Nausea
Precautions & warnings
- Do not use in patients with history of MI, ischemic heart disease, or Prinzmetal's angina
- Do not use in uncontrolled hypertension
- Do not use in basilar or hemiplegic migraine
- May affect driving ability (drowsiness and dizziness)
- Risk of serotonin syndrome (caution with SSRIs)
