Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6) is used for treatment and prevention of pyridoxine deficiency states, sideroblastic anemias, seizures due to hereditary syndromes of pyridoxine deficiency or dependency in infants, depression associated with premenstrual syndrome, prophylaxis of isoniazid-induced peripheral neuritis, and treatment of acute isoniazid toxicity.
Indications
- Prevention and treatment of pyridoxine deficiency states
- Sideroblastic anemias
- Seizures due to hereditary syndromes of pyridoxine deficiency or dependency in infants
- Depression associated with premenstrual syndrome
- Symptoms associated with oral contraceptive use
- Prophylaxis of isoniazid-induced peripheral neuritis
- Treatment of acute isoniazid toxicity
Dosage
Adult Dose (Oral):
- General deficiency: Up to 150 mg/day
- Sideroblastic anemia: Up to 400 mg/day
- Premenstrual syndrome: 50-100 mg/day
- Peripheral neuritis prophylaxis: 10-50 mg/day
- Peripheral neuritis treatment: 100-200 mg/day
- Nausea in pregnancy: 75 mg/day
Side effects
Side Effects:
- Severe peripheral neuropathy (with long-term large doses, excess of about 2g daily)
- Unstable gait
- Paresthesias
- Decreased sensation
- Decreased folic acid (with excessive doses)
Precautions & warnings
- Reduces the effects of levodopa; this does not occur if a dopa decarboxylase inhibitor is also given
- Isoniazid, penicillamine, and oral contraceptives may increase the requirement for pyridoxine
- Do not use in patients receiving levodopa
