Indications

Infections due to susceptible bacteria — respiratory, urinary, skin and some complicated infections.

Pharmacological class

Broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic

Mechanism of action

Inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, stopping DNA replication and killing bacteria.

Dosage

Usually 50–100 mg twice daily depending on the infection (as directed). Complete the full course.

Administration

Take with water; separate from antacids/iron/calcium by at least 2 hours.

Missed dose

Take when remembered; skip if the next dose is near — do not double.

Side effects

Stomach upset, diarrhoea, headache; rare: tendon problems, QT prolongation, photosensitivity.

Precautions & warnings

Stop if tendon pain occurs; avoid strong sunlight; caution with a seizure history.

Contraindications

Quinolone hypersensitivity; generally avoided in pregnancy and children/adolescents.

Drug interactions

Antacids/iron/calcium/zinc (reduce absorption), NSAIDs, QT-affecting drugs, warfarin.

Food interactions

Dairy/mineral-rich foods may reduce absorption; separate doses.
