Ceftazidime is a third generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the brain, lungs, ear, urinary tract, skin, soft tissues, bones, joints, blood, and heart.
Indications
- Lower Respiratory Tract Infections (including pneumonia)
- Skin and Skin Structure Infections
- Urinary Tract Infections (complicated and uncomplicated)
- Bacterial Septicemia
- Bone and Joint Infections
- Gynecologic Infections (endometritis)
- Intraabdominal Infections (peritonitis)
- Central Nervous System Infections (meningitis)
Dosage
Adult Dose:

Pediatric Dose (>2 months): 30-100 mg/kg/day (2-3 divided doses); severe infections up to 150 mg/kg/day (max 6 g/day) in 3 divided doses.
Neonates & up to 2 months: 25-60 mg/kg/day (2 divided doses).
Elderly (>80 years): Max 3 g/day.

Loading dose: 1 g; Peritoneal dialysis: 500 mg every 24 hours after loading dose; Hemodialysis: 0.5-1 g after each dialysis.

Precautions & warnings
- [UNSAFE] Ceftazidime may decrease alertness, affect your vision or make you feel sleepy and dizzy. Do not drive if these symptoms occur.
- Your doctor has prescribed Ceftazidime to cure your infection and improve your symptoms. Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping it early may make the infection harder to treat.
- Discontinue Ceftazidime and inform your doctor immediately if you get a rash, itchy skin, swelling of face and mouth, or have difficulty in breathing.
- Diarrhea may occur as a side effect but should stop when your course is complete. Inform your doctor if it does not stop or if you find blood in your stools.
- Avoid consuming alcohol while taking Ceftazidime as it may cause increased side effects.
- Ceftazidime should be prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis.
