Spectinomycin is an aminocyclitol antibiotic primarily used for the treatment of nongonococcal urethritis and gonorrhea, especially in penicillin-resistant or allergic patients.

Indications
  • Nongonococcal urethritis
  • Gonorrhea (penicillin-resistant or allergic patients)
Dosage

Adult Dose (IM):

  • Gonorrhea: 2 g (4 mL) intramuscular single dose
  • Severe infections: 4 g (8 mL) intramuscular single dose

Pediatric Dose (IM):

  • Gonorrhea: 40 mg/kg (max 2 g) intramuscular single dose
Side effects

Side Effects:

  • Injection site pain
  • Nausea, dizziness
  • Allergic reactions (rash, fever)
  • Rare: Nephrotoxicity, hematologic disorders

  • Caution in severe renal impairment
  • Caution in pregnancy and lactation
