At a glance

Carbonyl Iron + Folic Acid + Zinc is a combination capsule used to supplement iron, folic acid, and zinc deficiencies during pregnancy and lactation. It helps prevent anemia, supports fetal neural development, and strengthens the immune system.

Indications
  • Iron, folic acid, and zinc deficiency during pregnancy
  • Iron, folic acid, and zinc deficiency during lactation
  • Iron deficiency anemia
  • Megaloblastic anemia due to folic acid deficiency
Pharmacology

Iron replaces iron stores found in hemoglobin, myoglobin, and enzymes, and works to transport oxygen via hemoglobin. Folic acid is converted to tetrahydrofolic acid by dihydrofolate reductase, which is required for nucleoprotein synthesis. Zinc is a cofactor in over 100 enzymes, plays a role in DNA synthesis, supports immune function, and helps maintain sense of smell and taste.

Dosage

Adults: One capsule daily. In more severe cases, 2 capsules a day may be required, or as directed by the physician.

Note: For maximum absorption, take on an empty stomach; may take with or after meals to minimize GI irritation.

Side effects

Iron (>10%): Constipation, diarrhea, nausea, epigastric pain, dark stools, vomiting.

Frequency Not Defined: Hemosiderosis (during long-term administration of large amounts), urine discoloration, dental stain by some formulations, heartburn.

Folic acid: Bronchospasm, erythema, malaise, pruritus, rash, slight flushing.

Zinc: Nausea/vomiting, gastric irritation, elevations of serum alkaline phosphatase, amylase, and lipase (may return to normal within 1-2 years of therapy), neurologic deterioration (rare).

Use in pregnancy

Used during pregnancy to supplement iron, folic acid, and zinc deficiencies; take as directed by your physician.

Precautions & warnings
  • Caution in patients who may develop iron overload (hemochromatosis, hemolytic anemia, red cell aplasia).
  • Iron chelates with tetracycline, impairing absorption; maintain at least 2-3 hours gap.
  • Antacids decrease iron absorption; maintain at least 2 hours gap.
  • Present in breast milk; use with caution during lactation.
Overdose effects

Overdose may cause iron toxicity (vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, shock, coma), folic acid, and zinc overdose symptoms. Consult your doctor immediately if overdose is suspected.

Storage conditions

Do not store above 30°C. Keep away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
