At a glance
Bacitracin Zinc + Neomycin Sulphate Eye prep is a combination antibiotic used for the treatment of bacterial eye infections. It is effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Description
Bacitracin Zinc + Neomycin Sulphate Eye prep is a combination of two antibiotics: Bacitracin and Neomycin. Bacitracin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis and is active against gram-positive bacteria. Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis. This combination provides broad-spectrum antibacterial activity.
Apply a thin film to the affected eye 2-4 times daily. Before use, the area should be cleaned gently and debris such as pus or crusts should be removed.
Indications
- Bacterial eye infections (blepharitis, conjunctivitis)
- Atopic, contact stasis and infected eczematoid dermatitis
- Neurodermatitis and eczema
- Adjunct treatment in pyodermas such as impetigo
Therapeutic class
Ophthalmic and Topical antibacterial products
Pharmacological class
Aminoglycoside + Polypeptide
Pharmacology
Bacitracin inhibits bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan synthesis and is active against gram-positive bacteria (staphylococci, streptococci, corynebacteria, clostridia) and some gram-negative species (Neisseria and Haemophilus influenzae).
Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis and disrupting DNA synthesis. It is active against gram-negative aerobes and some strains of staphylococci.
Mechanism of action
Neomycin binds to the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, inhibiting protein synthesis. Bacitracin inhibits bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan synthesis. This combination provides broad-spectrum activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Dosage
Adults and Children: Apply a thin film to the affected area 2-4 times daily.
Administration
For ophthalmic use only. Clean the affected area gently before application. Remove pus or crusts. Do not touch the dropper tip to the eye or any surface.
