Betamethasone & Nasal prep

Betamethasone 0.1% E/E & Nasal prep is a corticosteroid used to relieve swelling, itchiness, and redness of eyes, ears, and nose caused by inflammation. It is a steroid that works by blocking the production of certain chemical messengers (prostaglandins) that make the eye/ear/nose red, swollen and itchy.

Betamethasone is a corticosteroid with mainly glucocorticoid activity. It prevents and controls inflammation by controlling the rate of protein synthesis, depressing the migration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and fibroblasts, and reversing capillary permeability and lysosomal stabilisation.

Eye drops: 1-2 drops every 1-2 hours until control is achieved, then frequency may be reduced. Ear drops: 2-3 drops every 2-3 hours until control is achieved. Nose drops: 2-3 drops in each nostril 2-3 times daily.

Betamethasone blocks the production of inflammatory chemical messengers (prostaglandins) to reduce redness, swelling, and itching in the eyes, ears, and nose. It controls protein synthesis and depresses the migration of inflammatory cells.

Adults and Children:

• Eye: 1-2 drops every 1-2 hours until control is achieved, then frequency may be reduced.
• Ear: 2-3 drops every 2-3 hours until control is achieved, then frequency may be reduced.
• Nose: 2-3 drops in each nostril 2-3 times daily.

For external use only. Use in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Wash hands before use and shake well. Hold the dropper close to the eye/ear without touching it. Gently squeeze the dropper and place the medicine. Wipe off extra liquid. Use within 4 weeks after opening.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

• Bitter taste in mouth

• Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment
• Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface or eye/ear to avoid contamination
• Consult your doctor if no improvement within 2 days
• Use within 4 weeks after opening
• Do not use in ear if eardrum is perforated
• Remove contact lenses before use and wait 15 minutes before reinserting
• Caution when driving (may cause temporary blurred vision)

• Hypersensitivity to betamethasone or any component
• Systemic fungal or acute infections
• Perforated eardrum (for ear use)

• Thiazide diuretics: Increased hyperglycemia and hypokalemia
• NSAIDs: Increased risk of peptic ulcer or GI bleeding
• Anticoagulants: Altered response
• Antidiabetics and antihypertensives: Dose may need to be increased
• Carbamazepine, phenytoin, barbiturates, rifampicin: Decreased corticosteroid efficacy
• Estrogens or oral contraceptives: Enhanced corticosteroid effect

No food-related restrictions (topical application).

[CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR] Betamethasone may be unsafe during pregnancy (Category C). Animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. Use only if potential benefit justifies the potential risk.

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Betamethasone is excreted in breast milk. Limited human data suggests the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby. However, caution is advised.

Pediatric dosage is same as adults. Use as directed by a physician.

No dose adjustment needed for elderly patients, but caution is advised.

Systemic absorption with topical application is minimal, but caution is advised in severe renal or hepatic impairment.

Overuse may cause local irritation or systemic corticosteroid effects. Consult a doctor if symptoms occur.

Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
