Description

Pharmacology

Mechanism of action
DHEA is produced by the adrenal glands and converted into androgens, estrogens and other hormones, regulating fat metabolism, endocrine function, energy levels, mood, and enhancing fertility.
Dosage
Adrenal insufficiency: 50 mg/day for 3 months; Anorexia nervosa: 100 mg/day for 6 months; Diminished ovarian reserve: 50-75 mg/day; Major depressive disorder: 30-450 mg/day for 6-8 weeks; Metabolic syndrome: 100 mg/day for 3 months; Postmenopausal women: 25-50 mg/day.
Administration
Take in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Not for use by individuals under 18 years of age.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose of DHEA, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose.
Side effects
Common: Acne, hair loss, hair growth on the face (in women), aggressiveness, irritability, and increased levels of estrogen.
Rare: Rapid heartbeat, dizziness, blurred vision—discontinue use and seek medical attention.
Precautions & warnings
Consult a physician if you have or have a family history of breast cancer, prostate cancer, prostate enlargement, heart disease, low HDL. Avoid in hypertension and thyroid disorders.
Contraindications
History of psychiatric disease, mania, bipolar disorder; hormone-sensitive cancers.
Drug interactions
Calcium channel blockers: May increase DHEA levels; Glucocorticoids: Suppress endogenous DHEA production; Insulin: Can decrease endogenous DHEA-S; Triazolam: May increase plasma levels; CYP3A substrates: DHEA inhibits CYP3A.
Food interactions
Can be taken with or without food. May increase insulin sensitivity in diabetes.
Use in pregnancy
Do not use during pregnancy.
