Dexamethasone 0.1% Eye Prep

Dexamethasone is a synthetic glucocorticoid which decreases inflammation by inhibiting the migration of leukocytes and reversal of increased capillary permeability. It suppresses normal immune response.

• Allergic conjunctivitis
• Ocular inflammation
• Superficial punctate keratitis
• Herpes zoster keratitis
• Iritis, cyclitis
• Otic inflammation
• Steroid-responsive inflammatory conditions of the external auditory meatus
• Allergic otitis externa, infective otitis externa

Dexamethasone is a synthetic glucocorticoid which decreases inflammation by inhibiting the migration of leukocytes and reversal of increased capillary permeability. It suppresses normal immune response.

Dexamethasone inhibits phospholipase A2, reducing prostaglandin synthesis, and suppresses immune cell activity, thereby reducing eye and ear inflammation.

Eye (Severe/Acute inflammation): Initially 1-2 drops every 30-60 minutes, reduce to every 2-4 hours as improvement; then 1 drop 3-4 times daily.
Eye (Chronic inflammation): Every 3-6 hours or as necessary.
Eye (Allergic inflammation): Every 3-4 hours.
Ear: 2-3 drops every 2-3 hours.

For ophthalmic and otic use only. Hold the dropper close to the eye/ear without touching it. Apply as directed.

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next application, skip the missed dose.

Common (4%): Cataract.
Rare (<1%): Ocular hypertension, open-angle glaucoma, optic nerve damage, defects in visual acuity and field (after prolonged use), transient ocular stinging/burning, local irritation, ocular discharge, discomfort/pain, foreign body sensation, hyperemia, blurred vision, pruritus, dry eye, conjunctival edema, corneal staining, keratitis, corneal ulcer, posterior subcapsular cataracts (prolonged use).

Prolonged use may result in ocular hypertension, glaucoma, optic nerve damage, and posterior subcapsular cataract formation. Caution in elderly, children, adolescents, pregnancy, and lactation.

Hypersensitivity; epithelial herpes simplex, vaccinia, varicella, and other viral diseases of cornea and conjunctiva; tuberculosis of the eye; fungal disease of ocular structures; perforated ear drum membrane.

No adequate information on drug interactions is available.

Can be used with or without food.

There are no adequate or well-controlled studies in pregnant women; should be used during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk. Prolonged or repeated use may increase risk of intra-uterine growth retardation.

Systemically administered corticosteroids appear in human milk and could suppress growth. Unknown whether topical administration could result in sufficient systemic absorption.

No specific dosage adjustment is necessary for pediatric patients, but caution is required.

Use with caution in elderly patients.

No special precautions are necessary for patients with kidney or liver problems.
