Econazole Nitrate (Vaginal prep)

Econazole Nitrate is an imidazole antifungal agent used for vaginal thrush, vulvo-vaginal candidiasis and fungal infections of the vagina. It modifies fungal cell wall membrane permeability and may interfere with RNA and protein synthesis and lipid metabolism. Available as vaginal tablet (VT) 150 mg/day at bedtime for 3 consecutive nights and vaginal cream applied once or twice daily with an applicator. Common side effects include vulvar/vaginal burning, erythema and itching. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. May damage latex contraceptives. Contraindicated in hypersensitivity and porphyria.

Econazole modifies the permeability of cell wall membrane in fungi; may interfere with RNA and protein synthesis, and lipid metabolism.

Vaginal candidiasis (VT): 150 mg/day at bedtime for 3 consecutive nights.

Vaginal infection (Cream): Applied with applicator par vaginally once or twice daily.

For vaginal use only as vaginal tablet or cream. Read instructions before use. Insert deeply into the vagina using the applicator.

If you miss a dose of Econazole Nitrate, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule.

Common Side Effects:

• Vulvar/vaginal burning
• Erythema (redness)
• Itching

• Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
• May damage latex contraceptives (condoms, diaphragms), so use alternative contraception during treatment.
• Can be used during pregnancy but consult your doctor.
• Can be used during lactation but caution is required.

• Hypersensitivity
• Porphyria

Theoretical potential for compounds metabolized by CYP3A4/2C9, oral anticoagulants such as warfarin and acenocoumarol.

No food interactions.

No information of any abnormality or adverse event in neonates while Econazole Cream/VT had been used during pregnancy.

Systemic absorption after vaginal use is extremely low, so excretion in breastmilk is negligible. Can be used vaginally during lactation if needed.

Safety and efficacy in children not established.

Limited information available regarding dose adjustment for elderly patients.

Renal impairment: Use with caution in kidney disease.

Hepatic impairment: Use with caution in liver disease.

Overuse may cause local irritation or allergic reactions. Provide symptomatic treatment.
