Guaiphenesin + Pseudoephedrine Hydrochloride + Triprolidine Hydrochloride

Introduction: Guaiphenesin + Pseudoephedrine Hydrochloride + Triprolidine Hydrochloride is a combination syrup used for symptomatic relief of upper respiratory tract disorders, productive cough, allergic rhinitis, sneezing, cough and runny nose, and nasal congestion.

How it works: Triprolidine is a potent competitive histamine H1-receptor antagonist with antimuscarinic and mild sedative properties. Pseudoephedrine is an alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptor agonist that causes vasoconstriction. Guaifenesin reduces the viscosity of sputum and is used as an expectorant for productive cough.

Important Information: Adults and children over 12 years: 10 ml three times a day. Children 6-12 years: 5 ml three times a day. Children 2-5 years: 2.5 ml three times a day. Under 2 years: Physician's advice preferred.

Triprolidine hydrochloride is a potent competitive histamine H1-receptor antagonist with antimuscarinic and mild sedative properties. Pseudoephedrine is both an alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptor agonist. It causes vasoconstriction via direct stimulation of alpha-adrenergic receptors of the respiratory mucosa and directly stimulates beta-adrenergic receptors causing bronchial relaxation and increased heart rate. Guaifenesin increases the volume and reduces the viscosity of tenacious sputum and is used as an expectorant for productive cough.

Guaifenesin thins mucus, Pseudoephedrine relieves nasal congestion and Triprolidine reduces allergy symptoms.

Adults and children over 12 years:

• 10 ml (2 teaspoonful) three times a day

Children 6-12 years:

• 5 ml (1 teaspoonful) three times a day

Children 2-5 years:

• 2.5 ml (1/2 teaspoonful) three times a day

Under 2 years:

• Physician's advice preferred

Oral syrup. Can be taken with or without food. Take in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and follow your regular schedule.

Common Side Effects:

• CNS depression or excitation
• Sleep disturbance
• Hallucination (rare)
• Skin rashes
• Tachycardia
• Dryness of mouth, nose and throat
• Urinary retention (in men)

Precautions:

• May cause drowsiness - do not drive or operate machinery
• Avoid alcohol or other centrally acting sedatives
• Caution in hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, elevated intraocular pressure and prostatic enlargement
• Do not use for persistent or chronic cough such as smoking, asthma or emphysema

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to guaiphenesin, pseudoephedrine or triprolidine
• Severe hypertension or severe coronary artery disease
• MAOI treatment or within 2 weeks of stopping MAOI

Drug Interactions:

• Sympathomimetics (decongestants, TCAs, appetite suppressants) may increase BP with MAOIs
• Partially reverses hypotensive action of guanethidine, methyldopa, alpha- & beta-adrenergic blockers

Food Interactions:

• Caution with alcohol consumption

Use in Pregnancy: Widespread use without apparent ill consequence, but specific data lacking. Use with caution.

Use in Lactation: Guaifenesin excreted in small amounts in breast milk. Pseudoephedrine and triprolidine excreted in small amounts. Use with caution.

Pediatric Use: Dosage available for children 2-12 years. Under 2 years, physician's advice preferred.

Geriatric Use: Use as per doctor's advice for elderly patients.

Renal & Hepatic Impairment: No known restrictions. However, consult your doctor.

Overdose: Drowsiness, irritability, restlessness, dizziness, gastrointestinal discomfort, respiratory depression, convulsions, tachycardia and hypertension may occur. Support respiration and control convulsions. Gastric lavage and bladder catheterization may be necessary.

Storage: Store below 25°C. Protect from light. Do not refrigerate.
