At a glance
Imipenem + Cilastatin is an antibiotic combination used for the treatment of serious bacterial infections including lower respiratory tract, urinary tract, intra-abdominal, gynecologic infections, bacterial septicemia, bone and joint infections, skin and skin structure infections, and endocarditis.
Description
Imipenem + Cilastatin is an antibiotic combination used for serious bacterial infections. Imipenem is a penem antibacterial that works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Cilastatin is a renal dehydropeptidase inhibitor that limits the renal metabolism of imipenem and protects against nephrotoxic effects. It demonstrates high stability in the presence of beta-lactamases.
Indications
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Urinary tract infections
- Intra-abdominal infections
- Gynecologic infections
- Bacterial septicemia
- Bone and joint infections
- Skin and skin structure infections
- Endocarditis
Therapeutic class
Other beta-lactam antibiotics
Pharmacological class
Penem Antibiotic + Dehydropeptidase Inhibitor
Pharmacology
Imipenem is a penem antibacterial with bactericidal activity resulting from inhibition of cell wall synthesis. It shows greatest affinity for penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) 1A, 1B, 2, 4, 5 and 6. Imipenem has high stability in the presence of beta-lactamases. Cilastatin inhibits renal dehydropeptidase I to limit the renal metabolism of imipenem and protect against nephrotoxic effects.
Mechanism of action
Imipenem kills bacteria by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis; Cilastatin prevents renal metabolism of imipenem to prolong its activity and prevent nephrotoxicity.
