Description
Ketoprofen 2.5% Topical is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that reduces local pain and inflammation by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis. It is absorbed through the skin to act at the affected site. This gel is particularly effective for sports injuries and localized muscle and joint pain.
Indications
- Symptomatic relief of mild to moderate local pain associated with muscle and/or joint injuries (including sports injuries)
- Pain from soft tissue injuries, sprains and muscle strains

Pharmacology
Ketoprofen is an NSAID that reduces pain and inflammation by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis. With topical application, it acts locally and systemic absorption is very low (approximately 0.5-1%).
Mechanism of action
Reduces pain and inflammation by locally inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis.
Dosage
Adult Dose:
- Apply 2-3 times daily to the affected area
- The amount should cover the painful area
- Maximum daily dose: 15 grams
- Treatment duration: No longer than 1 week
- Massage into the skin for a few minutes
Child Dose: Safety and efficacy not established.
Administration
- For external use only
- Apply on clean and dry skin
- Wash hands after application (unless hands are the affected area)
- Avoid contact with eyes, nose or mouth
Missed dose
Not generally applicable (topical use); consult doctor if needed.
Side effects
Uncommon Side Effects:
- Erythema at application site
- Pruritus
- Eczema
- Nausea (rare)
Rare Side Effects:
- Photoallergic reactions
- Dermatitis
- Urticaria
Precautions & warnings
- Do not use on damaged or infected skin
- Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes
- Protect treated area from sunlight or UV rays
- Avoid sun exposure during treatment and for 2 weeks after
- Discontinue use if any skin reaction develops
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ketoprofen or other NSAIDs
- History of asthma, allergic rhinitis or urticaria
- History of photoallergy
- Skin conditions like eczema or acne
- Infected skin or open wounds
Drug interactions
Interactions are unlikely due to low systemic absorption from topical application.
Food interactions

Use in pregnancy
First and Second Trimester: Should be avoided; safety not evaluated.
Third Trimester: Should not be used (risk of cardiopulmonary and renal toxicity in fetus).
Use in lactation
Not recommended during breastfeeding.

Geriatric use
Use with caution in elderly; no special dose adjustment needed.
Renal / hepatic impairment
Use with caution in patients with heart, liver or kidney problems.
Overdose effects
Overdose unlikely with topical use. If accidentally ingested, symptomatic treatment is required.
