Description
Mebeverine is a musculotropic antispasmodic agent used to relieve cramps or spasms of the stomach and intestine. It works by relaxing the muscles and helping restore normal movement of the gut. It is particularly useful in treating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and similar conditions.

- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) - symptomatic treatment
- Chronic irritable colon
- Spastic constipation
- Mucous colitis
- Colicky abdominal pain
- Persistent non-specific diarrhoea

Pharmacology
Mebeverine exerts direct action on GI smooth muscle to relax intestinal muscles and relieve spasms.
Mechanism of action
Relaxes intestinal smooth muscles to relieve spasms and cramps.
Dosage
Adults, Elderly and Children over 10 years:
- Tablet (135 mg): 1 tablet 3 times daily
- Modified-release Capsule (200 mg): 1 capsule 2 times daily
- Most effective when taken 20 minutes before meals
- Dose may be gradually reduced after several weeks
Administration
- Swallow tablet/capsule whole; do not chew, crush or break
- Take on an empty stomach (20 minutes before food)
- Take at the same time each day
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

- Skin rash
- Urticaria
- Angioedema (rare)
Precautions & warnings
- Stop taking and consult a doctor if you experience difficulty in breathing or swelling of face, neck, tongue or throat
- Consult doctor if symptoms do not improve within 2 weeks or worsen
- Caution in porphyria or allergic reactions
- Consult doctor during pregnancy and lactation
Contraindications
- Paralytic ileus
- Hypersensitivity to the drug or any ingredients

Alcohol consumption with Mebeverine is safe.
Use in pregnancy
Use in Pregnancy: Mebeverine may be unsafe during pregnancy; evidence of risk to the fetus. Use only in life-threatening situations with doctor's advice.
Use in lactation
Use in Lactation: Not excreted in breast milk at therapeutic doses; however, limited data available; consult your doctor.
Pediatric use
Not recommended for children under 10 years.
Geriatric use
Safe for elderly; no dose adjustment needed.
Renal / hepatic impairment
Renal Impairment: Probably safe in kidney disease; dose adjustment may not be needed; caution in severe kidney disease.
Hepatic Impairment: Probably safe in liver disease; dose adjustment may not be needed; caution in severe liver disease.
Overdose effects
Overdose may cause CNS excitability; no specific antidote; gastric lavage and symptomatic treatment.
Storage conditions
Do not store above 30°C; keep away from light; keep out of reach of children.
