Description
Menthol is used mainly for symptomatic relief of sinusitis, bronchitis, and similar conditions. It acts as a vasodilator and activates TRPM-8 receptors to produce a cold sensation that reduces pain perception. Methyl salicylate acts like an NSAID by blocking voltage-operated sodium channels to provide anesthetic and anti-inflammatory effects. The 30% concentration provides higher efficacy compared to 15% formulations.

Pharmacology

Mechanism of action

Dosage
Adult Dose (Topical):
- Apply a thin layer to affected area and massage gently until cream disappears
- Do not apply more than 3-4 times daily
Children (12 years+): Adult dose; <12 years: safety not established
Administration
- For external use only
- Apply a thin layer to affected area and massage
- Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes
- Do not apply to wounds or damaged skin
- Do not use immediately after bath
- Wash hands thoroughly after application
Missed dose
Not generally applicable (use as needed); consult doctor if needed.
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Stinging/burning/tingling sensation
- Redness or irritation (especially on sensitive skin)
- Mild-moderate local irritation, erythema, rash, desquamation, pruritus
Precautions & warnings
- Do not apply to wounds or damaged skin
- Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes
- Do not bandage tightly, wrap, or cover
- Do not use immediately after bath
- Discontinue if redness or excessive irritation develops
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to salicylate or any of its ingredients
Drug interactions
- Interaction with warfarin (displacement from protein-binding sites or affecting Vitamin K metabolism)
