Description
Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride is a 4th generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV to prevent bacterial DNA replication, transcription and repair. Xanthan gum is a viscosity-enhancing agent that increases contact time of the drug in the eye.
Indications
- Bacterial conjunctivitis (eye infection)
- Eye infections caused by susceptible bacteria (Corynebacterium, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenza, etc.)

Pharmacology
Moxifloxacin inhibits topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV to prevent bacterial DNA replication, transcription and repair. Xanthan gum increases contact time in the eye to improve efficacy.
Mechanism of action
Treats bacterial eye infections by inhibiting bacterial DNA replication.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Eye Drops):
- 1 drop in affected eye(s) 2 times daily for 7 days
Pediatric Use:
- Safety not established in infants below 4 months; however, clinical studies show safe use in children even younger than 1 month
Administration
- Do not touch dropper tip to eye or any surface
- Instill in lower eyelid
- Wipe off extra liquid
- Close bottle cap after use
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember; skip if it's almost time for next dose; do not double the dose.
Side effects
Common Side Effects (1-6%):
- Eye irritation
- Pyrexia
- Conjunctivitis
- Decreased visual acuity
- Dry eye
- Ocular discomfort
- Ocular hyperemia
- Ocular pain
- Ocular pruritus
- Subconjunctival hemorrhage
- Tearing
Precautions & warnings
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms
- Do not wear contact lenses
- Do not use after 1 month of opening
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Moxifloxacin or other quinolones

Food interactions
No food interactions applicable (eye drops).
Use in pregnancy
Use in Pregnancy: No adequate studies in pregnant women; use only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to fetus.
Pregnancy Category: C — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.
Use in lactation
Use in Lactation: Moxifloxacin is presumed to be excreted in human milk; caution when administered to breastfeeding mother.
Pediatric use
Safety not established in infants below 4 months; however, studies show safe use in children even younger than 1 month.
Geriatric use
No overall differences in safety and effectiveness between elderly and younger patients.
Renal / hepatic impairment
Renal Impairment: Caution in kidney disease; dose adjustment may be needed.
Hepatic Impairment: Caution in liver disease; dose adjustment may be needed.
Overdose effects
Accidental ingestion (5 ml bottle contains 25 mg Moxifloxacin, much lower than oral daily dose) - practically no risk of adverse effects.
Storage conditions
Store in a cool and dry place away from light; keep out of reach of children; keep dropper tip sterile.
