Oxybuprocaine Hydrochloride 0.4% Eye prep is a local anaesthetic used to temporarily numb the front surface of the eye for tonometry or foreign body removal.
Description
Oxybuprocaine is a para-aminobenzoic acid ester local anaesthetic used for surface anaesthesia. It binds to sodium channels to reversibly stabilize the neuronal membrane, decreasing permeability to sodium ions and blocking initiation and conduction of nerve impulses.
Indications
- Local ocular anaesthesia
- Tonometry (eye pressure measurement)
- Contact lens fitting
- Foreign body removal from corneal epithelium
- Incision of meibomian cyst

Pharmacology
Oxybuprocaine blocks sodium channels to prevent neuronal membrane depolarization, blocking initiation and conduction of nerve impulses and producing local anaesthesia.
Mechanism of action
Provides temporary numbness by blocking nerve impulses on the eye surface.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Eye Drops):
- Tonometry: 1 drop in conjunctival sac, after 60 seconds
- Contact lens fitting: 1 drop, another drop after 90 seconds
- Foreign body removal/cyst incision: 3 drops at 90-second intervals, sufficient anaesthesia after 5 minutes
Administration
- Do not touch dropper tip to eye
- Compress lacrimal sac at medial canthus for 1 minute during and after instillation (to reduce systemic absorption)
Missed dose
Not generally applicable (scheduled administration); consult doctor if needed.
Side effects
Side Effects:
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Transient stinging and blurring of vision
- CNS excitation
- Muscle twitching and tremors
- Convulsions
Precautions & warnings
- Caution in heart block, epilepsy, impaired cardiac conduction, myasthenia gravis
- Do not apply to inflamed, infected tissues or damaged mucosa
- Protect anaesthetised eye from dust and bacterial contamination
- Cornea may be damaged by prolonged application
- Do not drive until normal vision restored
