Description
Oxytetracycline binds to 30S and 50S ribosomal subunits to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis. Polymyxin B causes leakage of bacterial membrane to produce bactericidal effect.
Indications
- Eye infections (conjunctivitis, keratitis, corneal ulcer)
- Ear infections

Pharmacology
Oxytetracycline binds to 30S ribosomal subunit to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis. Polymyxin B causes bacterial membrane leakage to produce bactericidal effect.
Mechanism of action
Treats eye and ear infections by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis and destroying cell membranes.
Dosage
Adult and Pediatric Dose:
- Eye ointment: Apply every 2 hours in acute infection; usually 2-4 times daily
- Ear ointment: Small amount in external auditory meatus 2-4 times daily
Administration
- For external use only
- Do not touch dropper/tube tip to eye/ear
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember; skip if it's almost time for next dose; do not double the dose.
Side effects
Side Effects:
- Local irritation
- Ocular or oto toxicity (rare)

- Avoid prolonged use
- Caution in perforated ear drum
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity
Drug interactions
- Antacids, iron, aluminium, calcium, magnesium, zinc salts reduce absorption (if oral)
- Increased levels of lithium, digoxin, theophylline
